The way to the true self in the Orthodox tradition
Archimandrite Chrysostom, Abbot of the Holy Monastery of Faneromeni
‘Know thyself’ was the uncompromising desideratum of the ancient Greek philosophers, comparable with the primeval biblical commandment on which the Church Fathers have elaborated so extensively. Upon self-knowledge the spiritual life is built. True knowledge unites knower and known, while ignorance is always a cause of change and self-division in the ignorant. Know thyself means to be whole and undivided. More explicitly, the monastic tradition asserts that the knowledge of ourselves constitutes the fullness of the knowledge of all things.
